How much does a bulk bag of gravel cover?
Use bag weight and density to compare bulk-bag quantities against the calculator result.
Estimate how many bulk bags of gravel you need by using bag weight, aggregate density, area, and finished depth.
Bulk bags are sold by weight
A bulk bag is usually described by weight, while the area you are covering is controlled by volume. To compare them, estimate the volume and tonnes for the project, then divide the required kg by the stated bag weight. The calculator can do this if you enter the bulk bag weight in the bag size field.
- Enter 800, 850, or the supplier's stated kg figure as the bag size.
- Check whether the supplier describes the bag as approximate or minimum fill.
- Round up because partial bulk bags are not normally available.
Coverage depends on depth
A bulk bag can cover a wide area at a shallow decorative depth, but much less at a deeper path or base depth. If you are unsure about depth, run both estimates before ordering. This is often more useful than relying on a single coverage claim from a product listing.
- Use the same area with two different depths to see the difference.
- Compare the result with supplier coverage notes at the same depth.
- Allow for extra handling if the bag is dropped away from the work area.
Bulk bag checks
| Supplier detail | Where to enter it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Bag weight | Bag size | Controls the rounded bag count. |
| Aggregate type | Density | Changes tonnes for the same volume. |
| Coverage claim | Depth check | Only comparable when depth matches your project. |
This is an estimate. Site conditions, compaction, and aggregate type can change the final quantity.
